Phansad Wildlife Santuary

Phansad WLS, in Raigad district is about 152 kms from Mumbai via Panvel, Pen and

Alibaug. The sanctuary is spread across an area of 52 sqkm. The Murud-Roha road passes

through the sanctuary. 

The gentle Hills of the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary in Raigad 


in the state of Maharashtra are positioned in between the 


northern Sahyadri range and the western coast of India. The hills 


found in this region are quite similar to the ranges of the Western 


Ghats, though these are not directly connected to them.


The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is the coastal woodland ecosystem a varied species of 


insects are also found in this sanctuary in Maharashtra.


The main attraction of the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is the beautiful Giant Indian Squirrel, 




but this  animal is very shy and cautious and hence makes it very difficult for the tourists to catch 


a glimpse of the popular squirrel. 


The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary in Raigad is a bird’s paradise. The region includes a large 




number of bird species like the Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Black Eagle, the Yellow Footed 


Green Pigeon, the Pompadour Green Pigeon, the Forest Wagtail, the Asian Paradise 


Flycatcher, the Shikra, the Black Drongo, the Brahmini Kite, the Spotted Owlet, the Golden 


Oriole, the Iora, the Plum-headed Parakeet, and many more. About 71 species of butterflies are 


found in this wildlife sanctuary.



Flora : -

The sanctuary hosts atleast 21 species of endemic plants such as Clitoria Biflora, Balevia 

Gibsoni, Ramphicapa Longifolia etc. The 

ethnobotany of the sanctuary is represented by 

about  91 plant species.

Tourists can also spot number of medicinal 


plant species in this area.


Fauna : -

The wild animals found in this sanctuary are 


Panther, Sambhar, Wild boar, Barking deer, 


Hyena etc.

km from the sanctuary.
